Tips if You’re Struggling with Participation

By Yasmeen Alshabasy

In academic settings, it can be difficult to share your thoughts freely -- especially coming from public school, or any educational background that did not prepare you completely for the rigor and environment of Wesleyan. Here are some tips to help with participation:

  • Visit your professor during Office Hours and express your concerns with participation so that they know your interest is not the impediment. This will also help the professor get to know you, and your learning style.

  • Ask your professor what forms of participation are evaluated when your grade is determined/ what forms of involvement may constitute participation.

  • Try to set daily goals for yourself. I sometimes keep track of how many times I’ve offered my input in each class so I can gradually try improving.

  • When preparing for class/ completing the readings for class, make a note of questions and comments you could share during class time so it alleviates some stress.

  • Visit Dean Patey if you may require additional accommodations.
