Insurance Plans for Wesleyan Students

By Jasmine Jason

Q: Help! What insurance is available at Wesleyan? Can I apply for state insurance?

A: Deep breaths. There are a few options for students in terms of insurance, so let’s break them down.

Students at Wesleyan University are required to have some form of insurance coverage that will support them in CT during their time here. For many students, that means disenrolling from state insurance plans and enrolling with Wesleyan Student Insurance with Gallagher, a national healthcare plan with their parents, or with Connecticut state insurance. To reiterate, an individual cannot be covered by state insurance in two different states, so if you are covered by your home state insurance, you will need to disenroll in order to be eligible for CT insurance.

There are specific requirements for applying to AccessHealthCT. The alternative coverage option Wesleyan students are applicable for is medicaid, also known as HUSKY Insurance.

This insurance plan is available for individuals who meet a state-set low-income requirement, and is approved by Wesleyan as sufficient health insurance coverage for students.

PLANS: For undergrad students aged 18, applicants are eligible for HUSKY A. For undergrad students aged 19+, applicants are eligible for HUSKY D.

  • All plans require proof of citizenship with a driver’s license, their social security number, and must be a legal adult.

Students can apply online at accesshealthct.org or over the phone at (855) 805-4325. Be aware that this process can take time, and applying over the phone can be a lengthy process. As a word of advice, apply as early as you can upon getting to campus.

NOTE: Students must apply and be approved for insurance by Wesleyan’s deadline at the beginning of each fall semester. This insurance must be renewed yearly.
