Tips & Tricks for Move-In & Move-Out

by Griselda Solis

Here are a few tips and tricks to make college move in and move out go easy breezy.

  • Storage: Plan where and how you are going to store your stuff at at least 2 months in advanced to find the cheapest storage place before they sell out.

    • Make a list of places in order to compare prices of storages. Always check for application fees and insurance fees! There are certain storages that have hidden fees like a mandatory monthly insurance fee that can add up your monthly cost.

    • Consider how far/close you want the storage to be. Pro to being far is that storage is $10-25 cheaper a month compared to Middletown storage but this means you would need to rent a car or a Uhaul. Pro of staying in Middletown is that you won’t have to haul your stuff too far but this comes with a higher monthly fee.

    • Split a storage with as many people as possible and share the monthly costs.

    • Always ask how tall the storage space is!! Website always describe L x W but usually miss how tall the storage in. This is important in order to have an idea of how high boxes can be stacked. For example, the storage I use with my friends was five feet wide and 10 feet wide in addition to 6 feet tall so we  fit 8 people and each pay around $25 for a whole summer of storage.

    • If possible, try to buy similar storage boxes with friends or storage roommates to have an easier time stalking stuff up.

    • Check out a cart from Wes Station to move boxes in and out easier.

  • Arrive to campus early if possible. I personally like to arrive to campus early that way I can move in peacefully and don’t have to rush. I dont have my parents to help me in this process so I need as much time as possible to organize and unpack.

    • Work as an Orientation Leader (OL), Peer Health Coach, Usdan Service Operation Team, or other work related opportunities require students to move in early for training to avoid filling out paperwork to move in early.
